Diablo 4 Item Upgrades
The item upgrade allows players to increase the level of their equipped items like trinkets, weapons, and armor over a certain threshold. They can be purchased at any item upgrader NPC using the appropriate currency.
Upgrade components are inserted into equipment to give bonus effects and attribute bonuses. They are generally slot-restricted, however, there are certain universal upgrades.
Rerolling
In Diablo 4, a player can roll a new upgrade to an item. This is done through the Level Up mechanic, which pauses the game and displays the list of four randomly selected upgrades. The player is able to select one of the upgrades and continue the battle. Rerolling costs the same as the normal Level Up. However, players must be careful when selecting an upgrade as they won't know what the new stats will be until the item has been changed.
The upgrade level of an item is determined by the item's rank and rarity. Each level of an upgrade boosts the power of the item by +3. Alongside the primary bonus, a random extra stat can also be increased. Moreover, each level of an item's upgrade increases the recycle value of its additional stats. In addition, the reroll mechanism lets players alter the extra stats of armor and weapons.
Rerolling is commonplace in the early stages of the game. item upgrades of players use gold to reroll units to 3 stars, which could aid them in climbing the ranks faster. This method is often referred as hyperolling, and can be an option for players who want to improve their performance.
To reroll an item, players first have to unlock the Reroll Upgrade in the shop. Each upgrade will cost a different amount of Erons and Minerals. The more powerful an item is and the more expensive it is.
Most weapons have a higher trade value when upgraded to the maximum level due to their higher base damage. However, there are some weapons that offer a high trade value even if they are not upgraded because they offer useful stats that are appropriate for certain builds (e.g. Whistan's Shield for FB sorc's). There are some exclusive sets and items that do not require an upgrade, because they have low requirements or do not benefit from upgrading. Naj's Puzzler staff, Goldwrap).
There are a few sets with set bonuses that can provide additional effects when Link wears the entire set. They are beneficial in certain situations, for instance when exploring the Gerudo Desert or in a Dungeon. The Desert Voe set, for instance, has the Stealth Up effect that makes it easier to escape the attention of enemies.
There are also universal upgrades that can be incorporated into any kind of equipment. These upgrades offer smaller bonuses than the type-restricted ones however, they are more easy to obtain. Certain upgrades can be turned into gems by a jeweler, and can be used to upgrade any trinket slot. Other upgrade components are inorganic augmentations that can be inserted into weapons, and offer a small benefit that doesn't increase the damage.
Requirements
Upgrading items is a crucial element of enhancing your character effectiveness and strength in battle. Upgrades can increase the stats of an item, or add a prefix, or suffix. The amount of stats that an item can improve is based on its rarity as well as mark level. Upgrades are available in dungeons and raids or purchased from vendors. They can also be obtained as a random drop or taken from other players.
There isn't a viable game design solution to the issue of the "not worth it" feeling that some players have about upgrading certain items. The game should display more information on its compare interface regarding upgrades, like: "X stats gained, or X stats loss." However, that is impractical to implement due to how much complexity goes into the comparison process. There's not enough space to implement it in a proper manner in the UI.
Another option is to write a script that checks the upgrade requirements of an item before allowing it to be upgraded. This method is ideal for systems with an extremely small number of items that can be upgraded and have simple upgrade dependencies. A sword can be upgraded from Sword+1 to Sword+2. A script could check the Item Definition attribute for each upgrade and then set an Item Status of "upgraded" to indicate that the upgrade is valid.
This solution is more flexible, but it does require some extra code. It's also not the best choice for systems that are extremely complex.
A second solution would be to allow players to upgrade their armor and weapons. These upgrades, often referred to as Reforges by some, improve the power of the item, while reducing its cost. Reforges have different power levels however the most powerful ones are the Orb of Transmutation and Orb of Embrace.
Costs
The upgrade of a piece of equipment can boost its physical power, spell power and health (for rings and armor) or add an additional benefit when it's in your inventory. You can acquire upgrade elements through crafting or purchase them from vendors. They can also be looted, dropped from other players, on the Trading Post, or as an incentive. Upgrade components can be put into armor, weapons, and trinkets. They can also be attached to tools for gathering. The majority of upgrade components can be replaced with an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is the glyphs. They can be salvaged by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage tool.
Based on the type of item, upgrading an item could cost Dilithium or gold. In addition, many upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests required to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum upgrade level. The upgrade to the highest level can be costly, especially when you're upgrading gear for PvE.
Item upgrades can also change the type of ammunition a weapon uses or damage die size, alter its operative or unwieldy special weapon property, or change the hand requirements. Some upgrades can change the appearance of the weapon.
Before making a choice, you should be aware of the cost of upgrading an item. You may prefer to make use of your gold for upgrading rare items, but don't spend it on standard or magical-tier items. These aren't worth upgrading, and rare items will soon surpass them.
